Bigg Boss Halla Bol managed to achieve an all-time high rating last week. The average Television Viewership in Thousands (TVT) leaped from 5.7 to 6.4 million while weekend ratings touched 6.5 million, the highest this season so far. Clearly, film-maker Farah Khan has emerged as a more popular host than superstar Salman Khan, who had been the host and the biggest star attraction of the popular reality show over the last four seasons.
The weekend episodes hosted by Salman, however, fetched an average TVT of 5.2-5.4 million. The success of Halla Bol is also credited to the choicest of reality show veterans being brought together. Thanks to the low-brow drama pulled off by veterans— introduced in the Halla Bol segment as ‘challengers’—the audience seems to be more drawn to the action on the show.
Farah’s sharp wit combined with the antics unleashed by previous seasons’ popular contestants such as late politician’s son Rahul Mahajan, item queen Sambhavna Seth and starlet Mahek Chahal have proved to be the perfect ingredients to spice up the show.
As the show inches towards its finale, contestants are trying to create newer drama to grab eyeballs. A recent ugly showdown between Sambhavna and Dimpy, where both contestants called each other names and passed humiliating personal comments until they were forcibly pulled apart by Rahul and Upen Patel, emerged as a highlight episode of the season.
Television actress Karishma Tanna’s romance with Upen has been another attention-seeking gimmick. While many contestants in the past have announced their love or marriage on reality shows, Karishma is the first contestant to have broken up with her real-life boyfriend, Mumbaibased restaurateur Rushabh Choksi, during her stint on the show.
Soon after Karishma and Upen presented themselves as lovebirds and their PDA became the talk of the town, Rushabh announced their break-up on Twitter.
“Upen you can have her. I’ll get a new and better one. LOL #BB8 #KTishistory (sic),” tweeted Rushabh. Meanwhile, the war of words between Ali Quli Mirza and Gautam Gulati has added to the popularity of the two contestants and the show. As the episode showing Ali taking a dig at Gautam aired, the audience instantly took to Twitter to show support to the latter with hashtag WeAreWithGautamGulati.
