It is very well said that the messages conveyed by media acts like magic bullets and thereby media has a great impact on the masses, so has the television industry and the serials. Perhaps this might be one of the reasons for the victory of some of the daily soap actresses-cum-role models in the reality show ‘Bigg Boss’.
There’s no second thought when it comes to the popularity of television serials and its craze among the people, especially women – who are mainly the target audience of the so called “Saas-bahu-serials”. Not only these emotional-dramatic daily soaps influence the target audience, but also the characters featured in such serials persuade the masses. The level of motivation and persuasion is so high that they (targeted masses) start to look upon these reel characters as their real life role models.
As mentioned earlier this influence can also be seen in Bigg Boss show in which seven out of four seasons were won by actresses who played prominent roles in some of the most popular daily soaps. The following four TV actresses won Bigg Boss in a row.
Shweta Tiwari, a well known face in the television industry, is much known for her character “Prerna” in ‘Kasauti Zindagi Ki’ and is the winner of Bigg Boss season 4. Juhi Parmaar popularly recognized as the ‘Kumkum’ of the television world, won people’s heart and bagged the title of Bigg Boss season 5 winner. Urvashi Dholakia, despite playing a negative character in the serial ‘Kasauti Zindagi Ki’, her devilish acting and style was something that viewers did not wish to miss.
She is the winner of Bigg Boss season 6. Gauhar Khan is another such actress-dancer who became successful in getting into the hearts of the people. She came into the limelight from the movie ‘Ishaqzaade’, moreover there was also a reality show based on her and her sister named ‘Khan sisters’. Gauhar won the title of Bigg Boss season 7.
Interestingly Gauhar won over semi-finalist Indian actress Tanisha Mukerji, who was a much popular face than Gauhar was at that time. I guess this strongly indicates that love among the people for their daily saop role models is more than their love for (not so popular) big screen divas. Keeping this factor in mind, now it will be interesting to see whether this trend (of winning by some popular small-screen daily soap actresses or actor) will continue or whether this time a change will be witnessed unlike the last four seasons of the Bigg Boss.
If the history is going to repeat itself then there will be greater chances of Karishma Tanna and Gautam Gulati winning the title of Bigg Boss this season as both of them are very familiar faces of the television. Karishma has made her presence in various serials like ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, ‘Des Mein Nikla hoga Chand’, ‘Shararat’, ‘Kkusum’ and few more. While Gautam, who is popularly known for his character in ‘Diya Aur baati Hum’, has also acted in ‘Kasamh Se’, ‘Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi’ and ‘Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani’.
But if the history is not going to repeat, than this time the viewers may witness a transformation by seeing an RJ Preetam Pyare or actor Ali Quli mirza or model-actress Dimpy Ganguly winning the title and breaking the trend.
Not much time is left, only two days to go and it will be fun to see who takes the title of Bigg Boss 8 winner and fame this time. And most importantly it will be curious to find out whether the climax of the show this season will be new or whether the history is going to repeat itself…!!!
